Burger Competition 3 – May 2022

Burger & Beef Rib

And another year has passed, it’s time for Burger Competition 3.

If you’ve not checked out the previous ones, check out Burger Competition 1 & Burger Competition 2.

The trio of friends reunited again, 3 more recipes planned out for 8 of us to eat this year.

The same rules as last year. 1KG of mince (once again purchased from J L Butchers) each and make 1 burger recipe each with enough burgers to feed everyone that is at the house.

Burger 1 – All the beef

  • Seasoned burger patty
  • Beef short rib
  • Bone marrow poured over the rib
  • Melted Velvetta Cheese
  • Bun

Burger 2 – Burbon Burger

  • Seasoned Burger
  • Bourbon infused Red Onions
  • Mayonaise
  • Brioche Buns

Burger 3 – Cinnabeef Swirl

Burger 1

2 racks of slow smoked short ribs had been cooked before cooking the burgers and rested while the burgers cooked. They had been rubbed with Smokin’ Guns Hot and Big Poppa Smokers Money Rub.
As they went into rest, melted bone marrow was poured over them to add even more flavour.

The ribs were supposed to be bone in but they were just too big, so taken off the bone and cut in half for each burger, placed on top of the patty and then the melted velvetta cheese poured over that to make a really dirty burger.

They were very good and delicious but incredibly rich, the bone marrow had an unexpected affect by increasing the richness, most of us couldn’t finish the burger as it was just too much (even the left over ribs the following day, couldn’t eat more than half a rib)

Burger 2

After seasoning the burgers, the red onions were cooked down with a healthy glug of bourbon to help them soften and bring flavour to them.

Burgers cooked, mayo was spread on the bottom burger placed and then topped with the onions.

For some reason, the bourbon didn’t come through at all, we saw how much was put in but the flavour just wasn’t there.
It was a nice burger but without that hit of flavour it didn’t shine.

Burger 3

My wife was enlisted in to helping with the creation of this burger. She made the cinnamon buns with the cream cheese frosting.

The burgers has a good helping of the McCormick seasoning and this really came through when all put together.

The bacon was a little bit of a last min ingredient, it wasn’t originally planned. Cooked in the oven to be really crispy.

Burger and bacon placed into a swirl cut in half.

Adding the bacon was a genius move. It added saltiness that needed to be there to cut through the sweetness of the bun and frosting, the burger seasoning added a little heat in the background that brought the entire burger together.

This is another burger that shouldn’t work but it damn well did and well done Sam for winning this year.
