Burger Competition 2 – May 2021

3 burgers

A year has passed since the last burger competition.

My 2 friends from last year have decided to make this an annual burger competition, a friendly competition between us and we will be the judges.

The rules, 1KG of mince (again purchased from J L Butchers) each and make 1 burger recipe each with enough burgers to feed everyone that is at the house.

Being outside, we can mingle, which is lovely. Things feel kinda normal in these COVID times.

We’re set. We each need to make 10 burgers to provide one for everyone.

We’ve each planned out our recipes for a while. I think we all should have done practise runs but it really doesn’t matter as there is nothing at stake other than enjoying the food.

To business. Each burger is very unique, we’ve all thought very differently.

I actually added another 1KG of mince to my recipe to make my burgers.

Burger 1 – Sweet Juicy Lucy

  • 200g Burger Patty
  • 3 cheese blend inside the middle of the burger (Red Leicester, Gloucester with chives and garlic & Mozzarella)
  • Over cooked crispy, streaky bacon.
  • Krispy Kreme original glazed doughnut as a bun.

Burger 2 – Mac & Cheese Burger

  • 100g Burger Patty
  • Macaroni
  • Cheese
  • Soft roll bun

Burger 3 – Middle East Shawarma Burger

  • 100g Shawarma seasoned Burger Patty, cut in half
  • Pickled, softened Red Peppers
  • Pickled, softened Onions
  • Homemade Tahini sauce
  • Tortilla wrap as a bun

Burger 3 was interesting as a concept, but ultimately the flavour of the tahini sauce was too much and took over as the dominant flavour. Still enjoyable though. This could really be a concept winner with a bit of refinement

Burger 2 also had a great concept and great flavour, however, the cheese sauce couldn’t be thick enough to make it work and the Mac spilled out. There is a way to make Mac & cheese patties, it involves a bit of time, freezing and deep frying with breading. I must look into this.

Burger 1 shouldn’t work. Meat, cheese and a large amount of sugar.
The burger was too big, it had ballooned into a ball-like shape and you couldn’t fit it into your mouth to take a bite from top to bottom. But it was good, it was juicy, it had a tiny cheese pull and good flavour.

Burger 1 wins for 2021. Congratulations SParky!

The date of May 2022 is set for the 3rd Annual Burger Competition
