Right then, where to start. A Burger competition. 3 friends team up to see if we can create the best burger.
In June of 2020, James from JL Butchers announced an online Burger Competition.
Entry was £10, 1KG of mince to do what you wanted, submit entries online and they would be judged via picture.
At the time, you could mix households, we figured as things were outside it was even better an idea so I was joined by a couple of friends and we set to create a few different ideas.
We learnt a few things.
1) Don’t cook all your burgers at the same time unless you are going to eat them at the same time.
2) Seasoning is important
3) Don’t over complicate things…..yeah, ok
So what did we cook?
6 different burger ideas, using the same bun type and burger, just the fillings all different.
My lovely wife baked the buns and we used the meat as it was, no seasoning and made 10 x 100g patties from it. Then we got to work

And Finally Burger 6 – The Classic

- Red Onions
- Mayo
Each are very different.
The actual burger patties were dry. We overcooked them and cooked them all at the same time. Then spent ages constructing each burger, one after another and tasting as we went along. However, they were all tasty. The duck burger was a little out there but the concept worked.
Notes to not over complicate things next time, to cook the burgers one at a time if following this style again and to do 1 burger design each. Should we make this a yearly thing between us? A friendly competition but really just a chance to meet up and hang out for a day?
We sent our entry sheets off and patiently waited for the results.
I don’t know how many entries there were overall but one of our burgers came in 6th place. We’ll take that but my goodness, the photo’s of the other entries are another level to ours (the winner was a huge burger with smash burgers and just oozed). Maybe one day I’ll be at this level of cooking.
Bring on 2021
